Web Advertising and Paid Promotions

As the Internet has grown over the past 10 years, website promotion has gained in popularity and variety. Billions of dollars flow through websites, whether they are e-commerce sites (designated sites that sell products) or content-driven sites (such as newspapers). While e-commerce sites make money from products they sell, content sites make their money from advertisers.

There are several ways companies can use paid website promotions and advertising to support their business.

  • Banner ads, popular at the emergence of the Internet in the mid-1990s, are oftentimes bold, flashing boxes at the top of a web page. While the click-thru rate (CTR) of banner ads has declined in recent years, many companies still use this method of web advertising with success.
  • Sidebar ads, with higher CTR than banner ads, this form of website promotion is generally more costly than a banner ad. The advantage is that a user cannot scroll past the sidebar ad, as it streams down the side of a web page.
  • Pop-up and pop-under ads, while sometimes annoying to the user, can have successful CTR.
  • Floating ads, a fairly new and popular choice for web advertising, this type of ad "floats" onto the screen, obstructing the view of text while getting the user's attention. These ads are often animated with sound.
  • Paid text links, where a website pays for a link back to its site. Before paying money for a link, users should be sure it's a relevant link back to their site. These links are sometimes counted toward your site's link popularity, but this should be considered an ancillary benefit. The targeted referral traffic is the best reason to pay for a link.
  • Blog advertising, offering paid website promotion on blogs. To ensure a higher CTR for these ads, users should be sure the blog site is related.
  • Blog post advertising, where companies pay people to post content on bloggers' sites about their products and services.

Companies often find the Internet is the best medium for their paid promotions and advertising efforts. Web advertising is a convenient and cost-effective way to reach millions of potential customers - if it's done right.
