One of the biggest challenges for a successful YouTube channel can be growing a healthy base of subscribers and friends. Sure, sometimes the "magic" happens and one of your videos hits the perfect note at the perfect time, leading to an explosion of views, subscribers and friends, but for the most part, growing this fan base tends to be an extremely active process. It takes time to find the right channels to friend and subscribe to, as video titles and channel names don't always use the terms you search for. Thankfully, YouTube has a new tool in the pipeline that should take some of the edge off of this time-consuming task.
Currently a part "TestTube", YouTube's "ideas incubator"*, the new Comment Search functionality allows you to search the comments people make on videos. This really opens up some great possibilities for finding new people to connect with on the site. By allowing users to search comments, keywords that may not show up in a video's title might be found in a comment about the video.
Those comments can serve multiple purposes as well. While it is likely that the comment will lead you to a video or channel you hadn't found previously that corresponds to your subject matter, in some cases, the commenters themselves could have a channel on the same topic. Before you know it, you've found two new possible friends for the "price" of one. Not to mention that those new potential friends could lead you to other undiscovered channels as well. Never have YouTube's comments been so useful.
Granted, the users you attempt to friend will still need to approve your request, but that's where all of that strong, relevant video content you've produced comes into play. Every new YouTube friend you make leads to more people potentially finding your channel through that friend, so who knows how many more friends your new comment-search-discovered-friendship will bring.
