I have noticed that I have spent a ton of time on reciprocal linking, only for my personalized requests to go unnoticed. I have good content and feel that I would benefit those that I request links from. What should I do to make people notice me or does it just come down to the fact that you can’t do anything more?

Maybe you should rethink your strategy if you are still spending tons of time on reciprocal link requests. Focus your energy on making your content even more unique and compelling. Then promote the content. Shy away from approaching your contacts with a link proposal where you say 'I have a PR of 5, let's swap links." Instead tell them a good reason they might direct their visitors to your site.

I have heard quite a bit about certain industries getting in a lot of trouble with reciprocal linking (ex. real estate). Does anyone know why?

Beatrice it just depends on the quality of those reciprocal links. Most reciprocal links pages are full of non-relevant links and useless to the intended site. I think Google is discrediting reciprocal links that are not relevant to the site.

Is the reciprocal proving value to the web site visitor or is it buried in a reciprocal collection intended only to influence natural search engine rankings. Reciprocal linking isn't dead and shouldn't be feared. If another web site can provide you with traffic and you can provide it with traffic, then it's fine. Don't worry whether you get the Google credit. Include the link in an appropriate place within the context of your website.

Reciprocal linking can be frustrating. Time is better spent developing content to promote and gain inbound links. I'm finding this to be more effective then soliciting reciprocal links. Providing interesting and unique content gives another website a reason to refer traffic.

Adios,
Maria

I've seen fewer of these requests lately, but the ones I get seem like demands more than requests. I never link back, because I don't want to send people away from my websites.

Why wouldn't you want to include links to other sites? Your site visitors may find these links valuable.

NYadGuy,

Like mmurray says, reciprocal linking isn't all bad. In fact, if done responsibly, it can benefit your site and the other person's site. Obviously, in that case, you would want to trade links.

Where the concern with reciprocal linking tactics comes into play is the fact that irresponsible reciprocation can hinder the "power" of the link juice you're getting from that other site. In other words, if the site you're getting a link from has also sent that link to 400 other sites, the value you're site is getting from that inbound link is diluted/lessened.

Additionally, the more inbound links you receive, the better/more important your site will look on Google PageRank. You don't get that from linking (in essence a reference) to other sites.

Finally, trading links with a site involved in irresponsible link reciprocation tactics may actually hurt the credibility of your site by proxy.

But these requests are not for links that would be valuable. The only value they offer is "I've got a PR of X, and if you link to me within two weeks, I'll link to you on X and X website..."

That may have been OK, or at least worth a shot, a couple of years ago. But I don't have time for it now.
