Category Changes At YouTube
By Matt Keough | November 16, 2007
As reported at Search Engine Land, YouTube is changing some categories and adding others.
As YouTube states:
EDITED CATEGORIES
A few changes made to existing video categories:
- Travel & Events (previously “Travel & Places”)
- Howto & Style (was “Howto + DIY”)
- Gadgets and Games (now part of “Entertainment”)NEW CATEGORIES
The following new categories are now available when you upload or edit your videos:
- Education
- Nonprofits & Activism
Do these changes make any sense? Are ‘Events’ a good swap with ‘Places’? I don’t think the concepts are really the same. An even goofier pairing is lumping ‘Style’ with “Howto”! Huh? I really do not understand this one. If you are searching for videos about how to strut like Zoolander, this category is for you!
Seriously, what good is an illogical taxonomy? I suppose you could argue that people searching for videos online are not following a directory structure, so the organization of categories is not that crucial. However, these categories certainly will influence the “related videos” and the post-roll content. I’m staying tuned to see how it pans out.
And one more thing. Will YouTube ever have a ‘Business’ category?

I think that it was time to add a How To Category think of the traffic YouTube would get from all generations.

As far as the changes, I think that the Travel & Events category makes sense, but that’s about it. The new categories should be helpful, though. It’s probably only a matter of time until they add business categories!

Did you ever try to upload a video to YouTube? For a business, there really is no category that we fit in. I think YouTube needs to update and expand their categories even more.

I think its good that they changed some of the titles. It keeps it interesting.
