Should I Put My Videos On YouTube Or Not?

By Jim Kukral | October 25, 2007

Somebody asked this question over in our online video production forum the other day and I thought it was worth a longer blog post. Here’s what they said…

The biggest video outlet on the Internet appears to be You Tube, which has lots of fun but low-budget skits and opinion pieces and silly “America’s Funniest Home Video” type bits on it. Isn’t it kinda redundant or irrelevant at this point to start putting commercial videos on to that network? I mean, if the Internet is to replace TV someday, do we need to have another “and now a brief word from our sponsor” sort of attitude about it? It’s the 21st century!

Here’s my response…

It is absolutely NOT a good idea to not put your videos on YouTube, for a few HUGE reasons.

1. If your videos rank well on Youtube, then you’re going to show up in the regular google search results once universal search rolls out in full force.

2. The millions of eyeballs they get every day is too valuable to waste. Do me a favor, go to youtube and search for your industry’s top keyword or phrase and tell me if you get a result of more than a few hundred videos, if that. Now do that in Google and you get how many results? A couple of hundred million.

My vote… keep your brand off youtube at your own peril!

To the poster’s point about “commercial” videos. Well, let me just say this. Who wants to watch commercials, either on TV or online? Perhaps the better way to look at it is to think about creating Internet videos that assist viewers in solving problems.
