Small Businesses Shirk Marketing to Their Own Peril

By Mike Murray | October 18, 2007

I spoke with the marketing head of a manufacturing organization the other day and he made it clear that his members lack marketing dollars and savvy. They’re really good at making things, but knowing how to get the word out about their expertise is a whole other matter.

Here’s my advice to the small manufacturers and other tiny companies:

If money is that tight, you need to at least take baby steps. I encourage companies to hire someone to at least give them some starting advice. In other words, a marketing consultant could at least say, “Based on your company, target market, website viability, expertise and creativity we’ve seen in your industry, I think XYZ is your best shot.”

At Fathom SEO, we have given some prospects that opportunity with mini assessments that tell it like it is - here’s what’s good and bad about your website from a search engine marketing perspective. They walk away with some third-party advice that’s not pie-in-the-sky or glossed over. And we identify some practical next steps.

If you want to tap into some current thinking by small businesses, you should also check out a new “Small Business Attitudes Toward Online Marketing and Web 2.0” study detailed at ClickZ. It reveals respondents’ attitudes toward marketing and ends with a ray of hope.

I think you should better add the ranking of your site w.r.t. the keywords you are targeting…see that’s really puts more weight on your summary…

I own a search engine marketing firm. I have 8 years experience in SEO. I understand the struggles of small businesses looking for someone that will not take advantage of them. I currently picked up four clients in 3 months and while I was screening each , each client expressed to me that they have had a bad interaction with another SEO firm. They did state that I sold them in 5 minutes as I explained throughly the SEO process. One cannot just do SEO. It is not like driving a car, it is like making a car!!!!! My motto is

    BE #1 of BE NONE
