Dagnabit! I Just Want One Daily Searches Number!

By Mike Murray | October 11, 2007

I give. Who is hiding the elusive “searches per day” number? Years ago, everyone repeated a 500 million figure (global). Search Engine Watch has 213 million from March 2006 data (USA only). comScore teases me with some 9.8 billion number (USA again) for one month, August 2007 (based on home/work/university searches). And now comScore comes out with the whopper 61 billion monthly total - worldwide of course. Yet, this number includes other sources besides the major search engines (i.e. eBay) and it drops “university” as a special note about the origin of searches.

Call me bold. Call me “Numbers Murray,” but I’m going with 1.6 billion a day from major search engines across the globe. I’d love to see your data if it’s higher or lower. I just want a number. I’m not interested in going on a scavenger hunt to get it.

So where did I find that 1.6 billion number? I geared up and dove headfirst into the 61 billion figure, grabbed the big guys - Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Time Warner Network and Ask and came up with nearly 50 billion. When I came up for air, I did the easy math.

What does it all mean? Between the major engines and the network of other properties comScore tracks, people are in love with search. And if your business wants to be visible, well, get on board. Just don’t spend too much time with the searchers who say they’re frustrated, including those looking for cars.
