Yahoo! Plays Hardball

By Matt Keough | August 10, 2007

Yahoo! Search Blog announced that users will now see a player profile with current stats when they search by a payer’s name. This is really great for the fantasy leaguers. I’ve never gotten into that. I could never root against the Indians if my fantasy pitcher was starting against them. I do love baseball, so I searched for my son’s favorite player - Coco Crisp. There he is!

Coco Crisp used to play for the Indians

They plan on rolling this feature out to other sports. After they do that, wouldn’t it be great if they presented former player stats on a name query as well? They could start with Hall of Fame inductees and work their way back.

By the way, that is a different Matt Keough. I never even played t-ball.

This type of innovation is the best way for other search engines to chip away against Google ’s category-killer share of organic search. It also promotes another Yahoo! property - Yahoo! Fantasy Sports. Plus, it is fun.  Good job, Yahoo!

    Matt,
I think this is very cool and may never had noticed it had you not brought it to my attention. The reason being that I do all of searching on Google. I never use Yahoo! as a portal. I may use Yahoo!Mail or Yahoo!Photos or Y!Groups, but when it comes to scoping out the Yahoo home page, I’m not there. Now I have a reason to go there, especially if they add stat boxes for all the major professional sports.

It’s good to see Yahoo! providing as much depth in their services as possible.
