Know Your Competitors - All of Them

Some companies make the mistake of looking only at a few competitors when they’re busy putting together a search engine optimization strategy.But you shouldn’t just see what the obvious companies are doing. With search engine results, your competitors include the websites ranking above you - and they’re not always the names you know best.

Every keyword, unfortunately, can introduce a new crop of competitors. The good news is that some careful study of them will help you develop more depth to your keyword possibilities. You’ll also see some design and content ideas they’re using that you should be incorporating into your plans.

Regardless of the competition, it’s worth looking at the words they use in META data AND visible text. You may not want all of their words, but the research alone often triggers new keyword ideas in your mind.

But be careful: many websites choose some horrible keywords with very little value. Choose the best keywords while skipping the junk.
