Internet User Behavior - Loyalty and Skill

By Mike Murray | April 13, 2006

A new study on Internet user behavior underscores two basics of SEO - you need to rank high and use the right keywords. The data comparing different years shows how loyal users are to search engines and how determined they are to stick with search engines for information.

The study, “The iProspect Search Engine User Behavior Study,” found that 62% of search engine users favor the first page of results. And yet, 90% say they’ll sometimes go as far as three pages. In 2002, it was a different story. Only 48% limited their search to the first page and only 81% considered three pages.Willing to use “long tail” phrases if their first searches fail to produce good results, 82% say they will use the same search engine a second time; only 68% remained with the same search engine back in 2002.

Several years ago, I had a client in the building supplies/construction business. He thought people would find his Ohio company simply by typing bricks.

Searchers have come a long way.
